The TMJ Connection

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint in front of your ear which allows you to open and close your mouth and move your jaw for talking, eating, and laughing. It is where the temporal bone comes together with the mandible. There should be space between the two bones and a disc interposed. The disc acts as a shock absorber or magic carpet between the two bones and allows smooth opening and closing.

At the Gelb Center, we treat TMJ disorders, sometimes referred to as TMD, which interacts with head and neck muscles, nerves, and ligaments, as well as the teeth. Problems in this area are frequently misdiagnosed because they mimic symptoms of other diseases. It is estimated that although approximately 20 percent of the population suffers from TMD, few are diagnosed with it. Patients are overwhelmingly female (81%) and between the ages 11 and 55.
